2027 Hobonichi Weeks: Akiko Miyakoshi - Once, in Spring

Hobonichi

Akiko Miyakoshi is a picture book author and illustrator working largely in lithography, with a hushed palette of charcoal greys lifted by a single warm colour. Her books have been honoured with the Japan Picture Book Award, a Bologna Ragazzi Prize, and selection as a New York Times Best Illustrated Children’s Book. For 2027 she turns to travel — the window seat, the unfamiliar street, the moment you want to keep.

Carrying this one feels rather like carrying a print. Colours lay gently over one another, and two rabbits are deep in a conversation you are left to imagine for yourself. The year 2027 is stamped in sparkling red foil, and the spine carries the words that gave the piece its shape: Unforgettable Moments.

The Weeks keeps a week on the left page and a grid page on the right, with grid pages at the back for everything that doesn’t fit inside a day. The light hardcover has enough give to travel well, and because the design is bound in, there is no separate cover to add. Slim enough to disappear into a bag, and sturdy enough to come back out intact.
