Hiroko Kubota paints in acrylic gouache, building expansive, gently surreal landscapes where people and animals go about small adventures. A quiet scene at first glance, hers are pictures that keep revealing incidents the longer you look. She has contributed to the Hobonichi Artist Collection for several years running.
A light-blue forest stands over a lake, and the lake holds a sky full of stars, so it is hard to tell which way is up. Two white cats sit in a small boat with a telescope, waiting for something they seem sure will come. The path of a large fish is picked out in aurora foil, shifting as you tilt the book like light moving underwater.
The Weeks is the slim one: a week across the left page, a grid page on the right, and a long run of grid pages at the back. The cover design is bound into the book itself, so there is nothing to slip on and nothing else to buy — it arrives ready to be written in, and it bends comfortably into a coat pocket or a small bag.
