MOTHER is the role-playing game series written by Shigesato Itoi — released outside Japan as EarthBound. The connection to Hobonichi runs deeper than a licence: Itoi founded Hobo Nikkan Itoi Shinbun in 1998 and launched the first Hobonichi Techo for 2002, so the same writer stands behind both the games and the planner.
Dungeon Man is one of MOTHER 2’s odder inventions, and this cover takes him as its motif. The items and signs you meet inside his enormous body are lined up across khaki cotton, with several of the motifs embroidered so they stand a little off the cloth. Familiar territory for anyone who has walked through him.
A Hint Man grid notebook comes with it as a bonus, which is a nice thing to find in the box. “butterfly-stopper” pen holders double as a clasp to keep the cover shut, and the A6 book slips straight inside. Cotton, so it softens a little with carrying.
