Akiko Miyakoshi is a picture book author and illustrator working largely in lithography, with a hushed palette of charcoal greys lifted by a single warm colour. Her books have been honoured with the Japan Picture Book Award, a Bologna Ragazzi Prize, and selection as a New York Times Best Illustrated Children’s Book. For 2027 she turns to travel — the window seat, the unfamiliar street, the moment you want to keep.
An airport at night: warm light glowing against a tranquil black ground, the particular hush of a terminal between departures. The illustration runs from the back cover through to the inner pockets, so the whole cover reads as one large picture with the passage of time folded into it. The bookmarks are bright yellow ribbons, like a light left on.
Sized for the A6 techo, which slips inside. “butterfly-stopper” pen holders double as a clasp to keep the cover shut, wherever you happen to be taking it.
