Yumi Kitagishi is a Japanese illustrator and picture book author whose hand-drawn worlds are populated by white cats, rabbits and other small animals going quietly about their lives. Her scenes reward a second look — there is always a detail you missed the first time. She has been part of the Hobonichi Artist Collection for several years running, and for 2027 her white cat and friends move into a village and a dollhouse.
Here her white cat and a cast of small animals are worked into a wallpaper-like repeat, a pattern that manages to be sweet and composed at once. Small flowers and ribbons stamped in gold foil run along the spine as a quiet accent.
The Weeks keeps a week on the left page and a grid page on the right, with grid pages at the back for everything that doesn't fit inside a day. The light hardcover has enough give to travel well, and because the design is bound in, there is no separate cover to add. Slim enough to disappear into a bag, and sturdy enough to come back out intact.
