Join us for a rare 2 hour workshop led in person by the MD PRODUCT team, visiting all the way from Tokyo! This workshop will be led by Taiyo Saito, with support from Fumi Tanaka, Shota Kawada, and Keisuke Tanno—valued members of the MD PRODUCT team.
This is a workshop about slowing down. Over the course of the workshop, you'll learn the art of hand-stitching, working with a single continuous line to bring a design of your choosing to life on the notebook cover. Guided every step of the way by the MD PRODUCT team, you'll practice the technique before applying it to your own A5 Thick Square MD PRODUCT Notebook, finishing with an embroidered detail that makes the piece entirely your own.
In preparation for the workshop, please save some photos of your favourite motifs to your phone. You will select a motif to work with that will be what the final design will be based on. Simple designs work best. All other supplies will be provided and you'll leave with a one-of-a-kind notebook, hand-stitched by you, guided by the very team behind MD notebooks in Tokyo.
About the Instructor:
Taiyo has been a part of MD PAPER PRODUCTS since its launch in 2008, joining the team as a designer and helping shape the brand’s distinctive approach from the very beginning. Today, he leads product development and plans exhibition and event spaces for MD PRODUCT which relaunched this January, creating many of the thoughtful and memorable installations that have been featured at MD PRODUCT events around the world.
At the heart of Taiyo’s work is a deep appreciation for the quiet moments that paper can create. Inspired by the texture of paper and the brand concept of Yohaku—reflective margins in time—he approaches design with a philosophy of “subtractive design,” carefully removing rather than adding. This allows the natural qualities of the materials, and the creativity of the user, to take centre stage.
Known for his thoughtful approach and genuine humility, Taiyo brings both creativity and care to everything he designs. We are delighted to welcome him and the MD PRODUCT team to Paper Plus Cloth and look forward to sharing his insights, experience, and passion for meaningful design with our community.
