Hiroko Kubota paints in acrylic gouache, building expansive, gently surreal landscapes where people and animals go about small adventures. A quiet scene at first glance, hers are pictures that keep revealing incidents the longer you look. She has contributed to the Hobonichi Artist Collection for several years running.
Here she paints the sea at sunrise: a lighthouse holding its light out over the water, a cat stepping aboard a small boat, the whole scene washed in the colours of very early morning. It is calm at a glance and full of small incidents once you settle into it — which is a fair description of five years, too.
