Isa-Na is the work of glass artist ISAE, based in Ishigaki Island, Okinawa, working in the tradition of Ryukyu glass. Ryukyu glass is a form of glassmaking rooted in Okinawa's post-war history, born out of necessity when empty bottles discarded by American military forces were melted down and given new life. That spirit of transformation continues in ISAE's work today.
Her pens are made in borosilicate glass, a material chosen for good reason. Compared to ordinary glass, borosilicate has a significantly higher melting point, making it harder, more durable, and more resistant to thermal shock. It is also exceptionally transparent, which allows the soft watercolour pastel gradients inspired by the waters surrounding Okinawa to come through with full clarity. What sets her work apart is the detail she brings to each pen end, where natural forms are sculpted directly into the glass with a precision and delicacy that is genuinely difficult to believe. Feathers, sea creatures, fruit, each one a small world rendered entirely in glass. The detail of the strawberry tip on this pen is gorgeous.
Due to the handmade nature no two are the same. A reflection of the beauty of Okinawa.
