2025 Hobonichi COVER A6: Yuge Fabric Farm: Fish Scale Crest

Hobonichi

*This is for a COVER only.

Kinran is a Japanese brocade made by cutting thin slices of paper covered in gold foil and using them as threads to weave together the design. We created a simple techo cover using this technique.

The fabric comes from yuge fabric farm, a handicraft shop run by Enima Design. The company also runs Essential Store, a shop that stocks antiques, artwork, and clothing from within Japan and overseas.

yuge fabric farm actively performs what it calls “fabric rescue”, which involves pulling old fabric from Japan and overseas out of cold storage and using it for new creations. The fabric used on this techo cover is also a precious find recovered from a factory in Hiroshima.

This fish scale pattern was popular in ancient China. According to ancient legend of China, a koi fish climbed up a waterfall and turned into a dragon. The fish scale pattern is regarded as the highest level pattern and was used as the family crest of feudal lords. It has since been handed down over time to become a famous pattern. You can see the elegance of the weave at a glance, and the vibrant yellow is gorgeous.

The pen hook can hold a pen by its clip, and the cover’s shape remains nice when closed. The cover interior is silver, and the left-hand side includes the yuge fabric farm logo. The two bookmarks have different widths, so you could use them to separate what you’re bookmarking in your techo, such as business versus personal life. The calm gray tone and lack of charms on the ends keep things simple.

Please Read Before You Buy

  • Actual specifications may vary from listing. Each item is individually assembled and sewn by hand by a factory worker. Best efforts are made to ensure consistent sizes and specifications, but there may be slight differences.
  • Color and print may vary slightly. This material is first printed or dyed and then later sewn onto the cover. While colors are designed to be consistent, there may be uneven coloring or slight shade variances between covers. This may also happen across a single cover, such as a pocket compared to the rest of the cover. In addition, on rare occasions, there may be small black or white dots visible on the print. This is an unavoidable aspect of the manufacturing process.
  • Cover may contain variations in stitching or loose lining. Due to the structure of the cover that opens flat 180 degrees, exterior stitching areas may appear puckered and lining material may be loose.
  • Pen holders are rigid at first. The pen holders are rigid at first, making it difficult to insert pens. You can speed up the breaking-in process by rolling the pen holders in your hand.
  • Pen holder fits pens up to 13.5 mm wide. The pen holder is designed to perfectly fit the 12.2 mm (0.48”) diameter Jetstream pen offered as a free Hobonichi Store Exclusive. Pens with certain shapes and materials may be difficult to pull through the holder. The holder can fit pens up to 13.5 mm (0.53”) in diameter.
  • Please avoid storing your product in hot, humid places or placing it atop other objects for long periods of time as this may result in lower quality and color stains.
