Letters and Textures Workshop

Workshop details
Date: Saturday, June 22 - 10:00am - 1:00pm

An introductory workshop on Letters and Textures.

Join Azizah Asgarali (@GourmetPens) and Salman Khattak (@TorontoPenCompany) to explore the variety of lettering and textures that can be produced with a Pilot Parallel Pen modified to write like a Folded Pen. The Folded Pen is a type of ruling pen, which allow users to create thick and thin lines by adjusting one’s angle. You will learn several techniques to get the most out of your pen and you will follow along with demonstrations on angles, pressures, and speed, texturizing, letter play, and layout.

All supplies will be provided (and are yours to take home). No experience is required but you are welcome and encouraged to take the Pilot Parallel 101 Workshop for the complete experience. Show up with an enthusiasm to explore a different way to enjoy pens and inks! If you love to work in your own notebooks, feel free to bring a suitable fountain pen-friendly notebook of your own to practice in (Tomoe River, Rhodia).

Salman has been practicing Calligraphy since he was a teenager. He started a serious study of Arabic and Western Calligraphy 15 years ago and has been teaching both online and in person workshops throughout Toronto for the past 5 years. He also co-hosts the monthly Toronto Calligraphy Meetup currently being held at Paper Plus Cloth every 3rd Wednesday of the month.

As a member of the Calligraphic Arts Guild of Toronto, Salman practices and teaches a number of scripts including Uncial, Gothic styles (Batarde, Fraktur, Blacketter (Textura)), Italic and Foundational as well as Copperplate, Engrosser's script and Spencerian. You can see examples of his work at:
